The European Union has indicated that economic sanctions imposed on Iran could be eased if Tehran agrees to a negotiated settlement, marking a potential shift in its policy approach toward the country.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that sanctions relief could be considered if Iran demonstrates willingness to reach a compromise in ongoing diplomatic efforts. His remarks come amid broader discussions within the European Union about the future of its economic and political relations with Tehran.

According to statements made during an EU meeting, no member state opposed the idea of easing sanctions in principle, suggesting a growing openness within the bloc to reassess its current stance depending on developments in negotiations.

The potential policy shift reflects a cautious but pragmatic approach by European leaders, who are closely monitoring regional tensions and diplomatic efforts involving Iran. Officials believe that incentives such as sanctions relief could encourage constructive engagement and help advance negotiations.

However, the discussions remain conditional, with any easing of restrictions tied directly to Iran’s willingness to comply with diplomatic agreements. European leaders have emphasized that sanctions were originally imposed in response to specific concerns and would only be lifted if clear progress is achieved.

In the same context, Chancellor Merz also addressed broader geopolitical issues, including the European Union membership prospects of Ukraine. He stated that Ukraine’s immediate accession to the EU is not feasible, although a structured pathway for future membership has been proposed.

The remarks highlight the EU’s dual focus on managing ongoing geopolitical crises while maintaining long-term strategic planning for regional stability and expansion.
